Craig is Reader in Design Studies, and teaches on the MA Design for Change programme, including the core course ‘dLab1: Design for Social Change’ in semester 1. As an academic with an interdisciplinary background in the humanities and social sciences he is particularly interested in the ethical and social dimensions of design, specifically the complex power dynamics that constitute design. These include both the benevolent aspects of designing for meaningful social change, but equally the malevolent nature of design’s role in society which often remain unsaid. His research explores many of these aspects, including the forthcoming book from Bloomsbury Academic, Deviant Design: The Ad-hoc, the Illicit, the Controversial. A key area of current research is the relationship between design and post-capitalism, specifically degrowth.
