Karolin is a creative problem solver and professional user experience designer. Having lived, studied and worked in several countries, including Germany, Sweden and most recently the UK, Karolin has developed a deep understanding of social equality and diversity, which is now reflected in many of her projects. In her work, she approaches complex problems from a collaborative point of view and challenges the status quo of traditional design methods.
Insight
What is your favourite part of the D4C programme?
In addressing complex problems, designers often face intersecting social, environmental and technical challenges. Today’s design disciplines require a deep understanding of all areas, which is greatly fostered by the Design for Change M.A. programme. However, the programme also challenges students to critically question traditional design disciplines and invites students to take responsibility in their work for creating positive change through the design of products, services or systems.
One book or reading recommendation?
The academic year was packed with lots of interesting literature. But for me, these three books were the most impactful: Design for the Real World by Victor Papanek, Invisible Women by Caroline Criado-Perez and Mismatch by Kat Holmes.
What do you think is the role of design for change?
For design to create a positive, environmentally and socially sustainable impact, designers need to critically reflect on the design of their product, service or system not only during the research and design process, but also after its release. Sometimes it is important to take a step back to see where you are going. A critical mindset allows you as a designer to take on new perspectives and add value to products, services or systems.
