Rebuild Neighborhood

Design for

Social change

Year

2020-2021

Rebuild Neighborhood aims to shift online residents’ attention back to their physical environment, reestablish the enthusiasm for their present life, and rebuild the empathy which have been lost in their online interaction. In this experience, participants were invited to connect with their friend who live in another city and exchange their address, so as to find what activities they are interested in. After that, friends can let each other complete specific activities, and they will record the process of exploration by video, so as to share their experience in real world with their friends.

Insight

Did your project evolve in unexpected ways?

Yes. The co-design workshop I tested help me find potential direction which I cannot think up by myself. Both the designer and participants play their indispensable roles in the evolve process.

How did this project impact you as a designer moving forward?

The social problem I tried to solve related closely to me so I have more motivation to face the challenge in the design process. Only by closely combining the design direction with the problems experienced by myself can I make a meaningful design for users who have similar problems.

Do you think this project can be scaled up?

Yes. I think similar problem of the disappearing neighborhood happened around the world, which means people from different backgrounds who are interested in the activity can benefit from it.
